Unorganised Manufacturing Sector in India- Input, Output and Value Added

“Unorganised Manufacturing Sector in India- Input, Output and Value Added ”- Report No. 526 based on the survey of unorganised manufacturing enterprises carried out by National Sample Survey Organisation (NSSO) of the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, Government of India, as part of 62nd  round survey of NSS, has been released. The fieldwork of the survey was carried out during July 2005-June 2006.

This report is the third and the last in a series of three reports brought out based on the survey on unorganised manufacturing enterprises. The first report contained information on various operational characteristics of enterprises like location of enterprise, nature of operation, maintenance of accounts etc. in detail. The second report presented detailed information on employment, assets and borrowings of these enterprises. The present report provides input, output and value added of unorganised manufacturing enterprises at all India level for different industry groups and at the level of States / UTs for all the industry groups taken together.

The term ‘unorganised manufacturing enterprises ’ under the coverage of 62nd round referred to all manufacturing enterprises, which were not covered by Annual Survey of Industries (ASI). All government and public sector undertakings were also outside the coverage.

All States / Union Territories were covered by the survey except some interior areas of Nagaland, Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Leh and Kargil districts of Jammu & Kashmir. A dual frame approach was followed in the survey with a view to improving the reliability of the overall estimates by separating out apparently large units into one frame (list frame) and covering the remaining units within the coverage through the area frame. A sample of 82897 enterprises were actually surveyed out of which 2,260 enterprises belonged to list frame and the remaining were spread over 9,923 sample villages/urban blocks in the area frame.

Some of the important findings of the survey are given below:

  • The estimated number of unorganised manufacturing enterprises in India during 2005-06 was 17.07 million.

  • Out of the total enterprises 71% were located in rural areas and the remaining 29% in urban areas.

  • A total of about 36.44 million workers were estimated to be working in unorganised manufacturing enterprises.

  • Rural and urban areas contributed 43% and 57% respectively to GVA by unorganised manufacturing enterprises in India during 2005-06.

  • At all-India level, GVA per enterprise was estimated as Rs.51307.

  • At all-India level, GVA per worker was estimated as Rs.24034.
